Pros
Some nice and skilled devs
Cons
I would not recommend a developer role at TaxCalc due to profound organizational dysfunction. The software team lacks effective technical leadership and is instead driven by business analysis priorities, creating a chaotic development environment.
The primary challenge stems from a critical failure in the product ownership role. There is no clear, structured backlog management, leading to constantly shifting priorities and poorly defined tasks. This is compounded by a significant disconnect between the business and the technical realities of development.
The culture is defined by reactive panic rather than proactive planning. A common pattern was the sudden emergence of "critical" tasks just before a release - items that had been ignored for months. This was invariably followed by a top-down atmosphere of intense micromanagement and pressure, making it impossible to do sustainable, quality work.
