A scenic workspace with some nice nature walks Opportunity to research and play with new technologies Some very talented staff with varying backgrounds - industrial research, academia, software eng, dev-ops, etc. You heard a lot of very good ideas with sound technical reasoning Staff are friendly, except some management. See cons Salary was OK for Waterford Some weekend work but overall the workload wasn't too bad. Researching new technologies can be a lot of fun.

No real career progression unless you become a postdoc. The good ideas tend to go nowhere Code tends not to be reused due to inconsistent standards, lack of code reviews & poor communication between projects. Senior management seem a bit clueless about technologies which is odd as it's a research institute. Some are arrogant and I think they use the place as a piggy bank Some of the funding agency staff you meet are similarly clueless. The blind leading the blind. Goalposts keep changing on projects and expectations of innovation at the drop of a hat are unrealistic. Felt like some people were coasting and others were working 24x7. Other reviewers say the same thing. Development practices aren't great but I can understand that as we were mostly building prototypes using agile processes. Some teams had code reviews and others didn't which was really strange. No real consistency or even understanding why that might be needed. Little time invested in training staff which is mad considering it's a research institute. Long term staff seem demotivated which wouldn't encourage you to stay.
