They definitely do not pay employees what they should be paid. Merit increases are a joke. They'll pay someone off the street 10x more than a tenured employee that is deserving. They will lay off a whole department and give the work load of multiple people to the last ones standing, with no raise, no promotion, nothing. I have gone through 4 different layoffs with the company and it just goes to show you are just a number to them. Layoffs while still hiring? That's comical. BEWARE.
