Pros
I agree 100% with the mission of Surfrider, and stand behind the fact that it's the best ocean-conservation organization out there. Your work has tangible, real-world impacts. The team is very laid-back and casual, meaning you can make your own schedule and your work situation is very flexible. In some cases, you can take on projects that sound interesting to you, and not take on others. Benefits are paid for 100% (aside from copays) which is a huge perk.
Cons
Unfortunately, like a lot of other NGOs, many people here are overworked and underpaid. The compensation (even for managers) will never be competitive enough to stay for a long time without having external support, which I just couldn't get behind. Unfortunately, many of my co-workers had to work several jobs in order to stay afloat. There are very few opportunities for growth. It's easy for the organization to feel like a boys club with most of the management having been there for a while and not providing new or remote staff (50% of the company) a welcoming environment.
