Pros

Flexible hours, good retirement, good healthcare.

Cons

They tend to not promote from within. It is cheaper to hire someone new for the promotions. Sexism and ageism is prevalent. DAS tends to under classify jobs. They have way too much control. Even if the Department is for a job re-classification, it can get shot down by DAS.

Pros

Great benefits (Vacation, Sick leave, IPERS, Hybrid work, Holidays, etc)

Cons

Pay is very low, no incentive for advancement. Those hired "off the street" can negotiate their pay, but if you promote from within, you cannot. Therefore, if you apply for a better job, you might be offered $70k (and have experience) but someone that comes from outside (not employed by the state-with no experience) can negotiate their pay for that same job and make $90k. Pay is never based on merit. Doesn't matter how hard you work, you might get 1% more of a raise than someone who barely works at all.
