A Masterclass in How Not to Do Things - Account Manager Smaato Employee Review

Pros

You’ll gain an impressive level of resilience. Think of it as corporate bootcamp—minus the leadership, vision, or purpose.

Cons

Where do I begin? If you’re passionate about being gaslit, micromanaged, and talked down to by leadership, congratulations—you’ve found your paradise. Smaato (Verve) offers a front-row seat to toxic management at its finest, where upper leadership thrives on cutting people down instead of building them up. Direction changes with the wind (or maybe just with leadership’s mood swings), and employees are expected to navigate the chaos without a map—or even a compass. Transparency? Only if you count being told one thing and watching the complete opposite unfold behind closed doors. And let’s not forget the business practices. If you enjoy working somewhere that plays fast and loose with ethics, you’ll feel right at home. “Trust” and “stability” are just words tossed around in all-hands meetings to kill time between layoffs.

Pros

The people are great to work with and PTO package is pretty generous. Benefits are paid for the employee and there's still a large premium for dependents that the company pays for as well. Free commuter costs, and the Office Manager does a great job of keeping us well fed. There's opportunities for travel as Smaato is a global company with a big office in Hamburg, one in Singapore, and a smaller one in New York as well. There has been a lot of turnover, but there is a new HR team in SF trying to take on new initiatives and put things back into place. There's also been a handful of promotions in the past year, so if there's budget and the opportunity is there, you can move up if you hustle.

Cons

Being a global company with the CEO and Co-founders working out of Germany, it can be hard to find a unique identity. Though there needs to be consistency throughout all the offices, each market and city is different. In the San Francisco tech industry there's so much stiff competition and glorious perks such as work from home days, unlimited PTO, puppy daycare, etc are the norm. Being a little flexible with allowing employees to work from home perhaps once a week or once a month would be a nice benefit, as well as an anniversary or birthday day off, or a greater PTO accrual for each year of service, 401k matching, can help with employee morale and to attract new talent.
