Pros

Singular has attracted some of the most innovative scientific minds I have encountered in my career. Unfortunately, most of the pros about this company have faded into the past. The excitement around the IPO and product launches really made everyone feel like we were part of the future of genomics research, and at one point towards the end of 2021 there was a general feeling that we were contributing to a scientific revolution. The food options were diverse and extravagant, but that ended mid-2022 after budget cuts. Singular is a good place to get a few years of experience and develop certain skills before you move on to the next step in your career. Additionally, there is some sense of career stability and it can be the right choice if you are comfortable living with a below average salary for your experience level and don’t care about career advancement.

Cons

I want to preface this section by saying that Singular isn’t a doomed enterprise, however there are MASSIVE changes that need to occur in several critical areas if it ever hopes to be successful. There are too many issues to cover in a single review, but it can be generally condensed to the reward structure plagued by nepotism, the poor interdepartmental communication due to siloing, the inconsistencies in scientific data reporting, and the challenged social dynamics. There are no clear criteria that govern promotion within the company, leaving numerous hardworking individuals unrewarded for working overtime on their salaried positions conducting intellectually challenging work that exposes them to a laundry list of hazards, including, but not limited to, electrical, mechanical, sharps, and toxic chemicals. Annual raises are often mere inflation adjustments and title changes tend to be given on the basis of favoritism rather than merit, leading Singular to become a hive of dead-end careers. Severe communication issues between departments result in absurd levels of inefficiency, ranging from months spent on redundant experiments to some of the worst task management I have ever seen in my career. Shortcomings in scientific oversight result in data from experiments conducted without control conditions presented as facts, and the dearth of training materials/infrastructure leads to poor onboarding and numerous technical and procedural inconsistencies. Many of these communication issues are a direct result of the culture at Singular, where many departments form their own cliques and refuse to associate or engage with other people. Many of these people refuse to make eye contact or even acknowledge your existence when you pass them in the hallways and other common areas. These dynamics have resulted in numerous problems, which could have been prevented by a single week of interdepartmental collaboration, left to brew unresolved within the company for years before erupting through the surface due to the evolution of a critical issue. This is further exacerbated by Singular’s troubled hierarchy, where the C-Suite and directors block technological progress and innovation proposed by middle- and lower-level employees that deviate from the status quo. It baffles me how a company with an alleged culture of innovation actively discourages their engineers and scientists from thinking and working outside the box. I have seen numerous employees become discouraged from bringing up ideas that could have improved the efficiency of the instruments and contributed to the robustness of the company’s product line due to upper management’s inflexibility. With their expertise undervalued, many brilliant individuals are exiting the company because they see no hope for scientific contribution or career advancement at Singular Genomics.

Pros

Free food when it was there and I had a good team

Cons

They scammed me, went back on their initial job offer and then paid me less than what they offered. I ahouldn’t have signed the 2 week severance. If you work here, don’t sign departure papers!! Protect yourself just in case you are owed money. They are currently being investigated for shorting employees pay checks.
