Pros

It’s a start up, so there’s lots of room for advancement, which will give you something nice to put on your resume. Whether or not you will actually learn anything from this experience is up for debate.

Cons

Lack of job security- even strong performance won’t protect you if you do one thing at least one member of management doesn’t like. For example, reporting a payroll error, making a mistake that was caused by a policy change you were never informed of, or sharing a personal anecdote about the importance of fire safety in a fire safety email thread. In addition to that, they once hired 10+ sales people, and fired all but 4 of them 2 months later because they realized that the rest of the (already struggling) business couldn’t keep up, which is extremely poor business planning. Lack of professionalism- one manager actually showed up drunk more than once. On one particular occasion, they proceeded to talk to everyone in the department about their work performance and actually demoted someone while they were intoxicated. The same manager regularly yells profanity, even while you are on the phone and resolving complaints. Likewise, this manager frequently advises their subordinates to use extremely passive aggressive communication techniques when dealing with clientele and coworkers. Lack of communication- one owner says this, the other says the exact opposite. Policies change on a daily basis and only a handful of people are ever alerted. Call handling procedures are EXTREMELY inconsistent across the board. No one ever seems to know what’s actually going on. Negativity- some supervisors think it’s appropriate to speak negatively about one or more of their subordinates, to other subordinates. Some supervisors even take it so far as to alert members of their team that someone is being fired or demoted, but to not tell said person about this until their replacement has been trained. Lack of benefits/pay increases- during my training, they actually tried to present Oregon’s MANDATORY paid sick leave as a benefit. They also mentioned catered meals once a month (what they left out of this is that the catered meals often run out before everyone, who’s at work when the meal arrives, has a chance to claim a portion. The first catered meal I experienced was Baja Fresh and by the time my start time, 6am, was called to come grab food, there was nothing but tortillas and sour cream left, and I was likely one of the first 15% of the people called). I believe the first pay increase comes at 1 year of employment, and even then, it doesn’t seem to be much. To top it all off, the HR department is basically nonexistent, so you have to deal with all of this insanity with no perks, mediocre pay, crazy burnout, and just overall inconsistency for 12 months, just to get a tiny little pay bump and some PTO. Honestly, the entire situation here is enough to make even the most positive and professional person lose their mind.
