Pros
Interesting and diverse work: more scientifically oriented research, software development, providing training and instruction to clients, client engineering project work. Supervisors and senior staff are generous with their time, especially early on. I came from a different technical background so this was invaluable. One really nice thing is that pretty much all decision makers have a strong technical background, so proposals or ideas are judged on technical merit. While senior staff makes final decisions, I’ve seen ideas from all levels being retained. Consistent and good sized raises offered so I can focus on the work and that work is rewarded. The company is partially employee owned, and shares are offered at no cost after having proven value to the company. Family friendly! They are quite accommodating to scheduling limitations due to kids (especially after a separation), which helps a lot with work/home life balance. Also, I maintained status and kept advancement opportunities even with two parental leaves, which was very reassuring. Facilities are top notch, very comfortable. The treadmills and bikes in the gym within the building (with showers in the locker room) are a huge plus for me.
Cons
I live in Montreal and so public transit is a non-starter.
