I'm amazed at how much I've learned since arriving here. - Graduate Research Assistant Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Employee Review

Pros

As one would expect at a top engineering school, I've learned a tremendous amount and had the opportunity to work with a lot of very smart people.

Cons

Must pay out of pocket for health insurance. While I have been fortunate, in most cases funding must be renewed each year, leading to uncertainty at times. Conference travel expenses are only supported partially by the school, which means a lot of out of pocket costs for conferences that aren't within driving distance.

Pros

The medical insurance was great. It was a custom plan with low co-pays and no deductible. I worked with some amazing people and learned a lot about my field. This position allowed me to travel all over the country and internationally. We were given the week between Christmas and New Year's off. The best part of the job was interacting with students, meeting them and helping them. We had a pretty lenient work from home policy too.

Cons

HR does not actually care about the employees. My boss set me up for failure. The school still thinks it is a top 25 university. They are not looking to the future and are stuck. Even with the the new president of the university is backward thinking and rarely talks to employees.
