Pros

This job as a counselor was extremely rewarding. I was able to help adolescents who needed some guidance. Most of the teens that were sent here were done so under court order. They had either been truant, ran away, or may have been into drugs. They live in these facilities where there every action is monitored by the counselors. I had the opportunity to work with and mentor many young individuals. I taught classes like anger management and 12-step. Many of these individuals did better themselves at this program and I could really tell that we made a difference.

Cons

The bad side is that you have to have a bachelor's degree to work as a counselor, but you barely make enough even pay your rent. There are not very many positions above a counselor so moving up is next to impossible. Unfortunately with a low paying job you get alot of employees who do not care about the teens and end up being more destructive to their lives. A lot of the directors do not hold employees or the residents fully accountable which makes it hard to enforce the rules. These teens need consistency and sometimes it is really hard to get it.
