Pros

You are employed and you get to fly free: but don’t be fooled by that either!

Cons

This is truly one of the worst jobs I’ve ever had in my life. The pay is absolutely horrible, management has no idea what they’re doing, there are 75,000 people you have to answer to, and no one has an answer for you. He seemed to think that they’re a large airline, but the top brass has absolutely no backbone, and all the management changes frequently, and no one seems to know what they’re doing. It takes forever to get an answer, the hotels you stay in are usually pretty crummy, usually in pretty crummy areas, and the attitudes of most of the other flight attendants are usually really rude, and mean. You are not allowed to have any fun, as everyone wants to be a stickler for the dumbest things on an airplane that don’t matter to anyone. It’s no longer about passenger service, it’s all about policies and procedures that don’t matter. It’s almost like the people on top are playing games with puppets and seeing how far they can push you before they can just fire you. Do not be fooled that the union will represent you or take care of you. They simply do not. The president of the union is a complete and total joke, does not get back to you or help you, and is a complete waste of time with her being an employee as a flight attendant, and an IRA instructor, she also says she will fight for you, but who is gonna fight for you and they’re going to be going up against their own bosses? Is she really gonna fight for you or is she really just making her own résumé? It is a horrible job, and if you have good ideas or if you want to get further in the company, it’s all about brown nosing, and there’s nothing with real people who have really good ideas. If you’re the type of person who likes to just shut up, keep your head down, do hard work, and not receive any recognition, but have to constantly be covering your own butt and deal with working with other people who are rude and mean to you, this is a job for you. If you really wanna be a flight attendant, go to a real company. This job is an absolute joke and these people are complete idiots. They do not care about you, you are simply a name in a slot to get you going so that they have their numbers covered. They do not care about you, they will never care about you, and they will fire you without even telling you. And God for bid you get hurt on the job. The insurance is horrible, and the instructors are simply flight attendants that they put in the position because they don’t have anyone else to teach it. It is glorified nonsense. Don’t waste your time, don’t screw up your résumé, and don’t trust these people. It is absolutely the worst job on the planet.

Pros

1. Incredible work-life balance. The team is incredibly collaborative and there to help out. There are plenty of opportunities to take ownership and step in where you would like to make decisions backed by data. Everyone understands life outside of work is real and is not just accommodating to it but encouraging prioritizing that. 2. The autonomy given to employees to do their job as they see fit is incredible. 3. Travel benefits. I went to London last weekend to watch a soccer game for the cost of taxes.

Cons

1. Corporate red tape. For being under the American Airlines umbrella, I would've assumed we would be more established. It feels like a startup in some ways with the red tape and scissors being held by American. This just slows things down. 2. Vacation days lag behind the market. Other companies have 4-5 weeks or unlimited PTO. For a company that runs on business travel and vacations, I would've thought that the emphasis on the need to vacation would be higher as you get 10 days to start + 2 jetaway days (floating holidays) + 4 days of personal time (meant for appts and sick days). 3. Salary expectations not met. However the room for growth within the company counters this.
