Good people, good work environment - Systems Administrator New York Internet Employee Review

Pros

Working at NYI was a good experience. The work was interesting and challenging and my coworkers were mostly awesome. NYI had a great custom tailored in-house customer management system which was an extremely useful tool for every admin.

Cons

The datacenter is staffed 24/7 and working overnight was always a challenge. NYI needs a solid employee development plan, there was no structure to on the job training. Aside from that, I did learn quite a bit working on diverse systems. Pay was low and I moved on in my career.

Pros

Working at NYI you'll get lots of exposure to many different technologies. It is a laid back atmosphere with lots of project work available, as well the usual stream of client tickets. The FreeBSD community has a strong presence there, and it shows in both NYI's and the client systems. The coworkers and work environment are extraordinarily friendly and welcoming. HR has also overhauled the insurance/benefits system recently, and it is really great now. There are big plans for expanding the network infrastructure, it should be exciting times ahead.

Cons

You have to run on your own initiative to grow or you will stagnate. You have to keep learning during the slow periods to gain more responsibility.

Pros

Nothing worth mentioning really. They mostly hire immigrants who cannot find another job.If this is your first job in IT you can pick up on some of the basic knowledge but you should leave after your first year.

Cons

Pay is very low. You should expect to earn $14-16/hr. No overtime. Management and Human Resources doesn't care about their staff. You will be dealing with hardware replacement for the most part, very little exposure to system administration. Your manager will be absent 4 days out the week, and when he's there you won't hear much from him. Don't expect a decent raise. Bonuses are not worth waiting for either. HR does their best each year to pick the worst (cheapest) benefit plan. For the most part you'll be doing work similar to a janitor. You can expect to throw out trash, wipe coffee off of the floor, exterminate stink bugs, wash floors, etc. Also, during summer, their cooling system doesn't work, so they rotate people to spray water out of a hose onto their A/Cs till the temperatures cool down. Like I said, there's very little room to learn anything to do with your field. I will invite more ex coworkers to give a review as well. Thank you glassdoor for letting us share!

Dear Anonymous, Thank you for reviewing our company - we appreciate your feedback. We must however bring clarity to your account as well as correct several comments that are not factual. First and foremost, you are describing (albeit in a negative way) our Entry Level Data Center Technician position, while putting “admin” as your job title. It is true that some aspects of this position could be tedious or physical, however, for the most part this job is an opportunity to get hands-on experience and understanding of the industry. We are confident that is why you chose to work here and that is how you got your initial much needed experience at the time. As with any entry level position, it is possible to outgrow it. To that end, there is no shortage of examples within our company of the employees moving up from the entry level positions to the higher ranks. Your comment on overtime is false – in accordance with NY state laws, NYI pays overtime to non-exempt employees. Medical benefit choices for small businesses are not many - your plan might have been basic but was covered by the company 100% with $0 deductible. And yes you are absolutely correct - we don’t discriminate against immigrants. Team NYI
