I was disheartened to read your review, since you know how hard we work to provide a great workplace, benefits, and perks. I don’t believe your review is an honest reflection of our company. We have a close-knit culture, a genuine dedication to constantly improve, and are very open to feedback from staff. I invite you to speak with me, your manager or an executive about what you perceive as weaknesses of our company. I will address your cons below.
- "Required" company outings...
Company outings are never required but highly encouraged so that staff can spend quality time together outside of the office. We always close a few hours early so as not to take up too much of your personal time. Every event has been well attended - bowling, beach day, boat tour through the city - and staff really look forward to these opportunities to kick back and have fun.
- People seem to have a rather pretentious mentality due to the fact that we work with non-profits
What you may interpret as pretentiousness others see as PRIDE. We take great pride in helping over 2500 nonprofit organizations with our products and professional services. Over 85% of our staff come from a nonprofit background and have a passion for giving back and serving others. Every person I interview wants to work here because of our positive social mission.
- Culture seems to require people to put a "nice" face on, but overall, I don't feel valued and respected...
In the most recent staff assessment, all of our employees reported feeling valued. No one (including you) reported feeling undervalued. If anything has changed in the past few weeks, I would love to discuss that with you. I have worked at Neon for over three and half years and can assure you that no one is required to put a nice face on, including me. We have a very honest culture and issues can be reported through many channels – management, executives, HR, anonymous surveys.
- Not a lot of career development. Not many people are promoted, or if they are, just given a slightly nicer title with no added responsibilities or skills to show for such promotion.
Of 43 employees, 4 are executives and 8 are managers. In the past 12 months alone, we’ve promoted 12 people. Promotions are earned and come with more responsibilities and a generous increase in pay. Additionally, 4 employees have asked to take on a new challenge (and role) within the company this year, and we have been able to honor their request.
- Location is not that great, pretty far outside the city and not easily accessible
The CTA and Metra run close to our office, and almost half of our employees take advantage of our Ventra Benefits Program. The majority of our staff live near the area and bike, walk or take public transportation. A handful drive to work. Moreover, our location has not affected our ability to attract top talent to the company.
- Unprepared team members. A lot of the new hires and existing people they bring in are extremely unqualified…
We have a thorough hiring process that includes, at a minimum, three interviews. Some positions require a portfolio or pre-interview assignment as well as an onsite assignment. Thanks to our robust onboarding program and exceptional trainers, most of our hires are able to complete training and perform their job within one month of starting. It takes time and dedication to master multiple products and learn a multitude of department workflows. Plus with monthly releases, there is always something new to learn.
