Pros

Met some super talented individuals who are highly skilled across the business and very down to earth.

Cons

The pressure at Modulr is relentless, to the point where there is little trust or autonomy to carry out your role effectively. I have never worked in an environment with daily stand ups scrutinising individual tasks, on top of already submitting weekly reports. It felt like micromanagement at its worst. During my time at the company, there were frequent rounds of redundancies, with people disappearing with little to no explanation or vague references to “personal reasons”. This created a constant sense of uncertainty and concern across the team. It was extremely difficult to meet objectives with such a small team, yet there was little understanding or support from senior leadership. Expectations remained high, despite individuals covering multiple roles. We were repeatedly told the team would grow, but this did not materialise for a long period, despite a clear need for additional headcount. The redundancy process itself was handled poorly. There was no prior warning, and the process felt abrupt and impersonal. Given Modulr’s reputation in the market, this was disappointing and not in line with the standards you would expect from a company in this space. There was also excessive involvement from senior leadership in areas where it was not necessary. This often resulted in constant requests for decks, presentations, and plans, adding further administrative burden at a time when the team was already stretched. Leadership lacked clear structure and direction, and there were noticeable gaps in people management and communication, particularly given the size of the team being overseen. The approval process made it difficult to execute work efficiently, with multiple layers of sign off required, sometimes including senior leaders and even the CEO. For a scale up, this slowed progress significantly and conflicted with the expectation of moving at pace. Based on my experience, I would strongly advise anyone considering a role here to think twice before accepting an offer.
