Cons
This company has some very poor leadership throughout the organization. Unfortunately, this is typically above the service center level and rolls downhill. There are also several Operations managers with no guidance or leadership skills. The corporate strategies are consistently changing and contradicting themselves at times. Company focus consistently changes directions from one aspect to the next without proper execution before the switch. Poor work processes and lack of resources make it tough to keep up with providing good customer service. Communication is very poor. There is little investment in employees in terms of professional growth and career progression. No employee appreciation events or acknowledgement. Witnessed this when a fellow employee retired after nearly 18 years. The service center threw a small party for him, but there was no kind of recognition from the company. This is not a learning or innovative culture. Work harder not smarter. This company will have a hard time hiring and retaining strong talent as the pool of millennials are taking over the workforce. Some of the moral principles and actions in the company are riding a fine line on legal repercussions. A person's objective should be to move up the ladder in a company. When the turnover rate amongst service center managers is higher than the turnover rate for the rest of the employees, that should be a telltale sign of what to expect from Merchants Metals. Most of the good talent leaves the company. Others stay because they've worked in the fence industry their whole life and don't know what else to do.
