Pros
I started teaching at Manhattan Language 5 years ago, after a professional hiatus of two years, that, in turn, was after more than 25 years in ESL education, in both the classroom and in administration. Manhattan Language distinguishes itself from others by succeeding in maintaining a consistently professional and positive learning environment for its students and work environment for its staff (I can speak directly only of faculty since I haven't worked in administration at this school). Bonita Vander and the administration in her charge treat the teachers with respect and consideration. Salaries are better than average for an independent school and appreciation is shown in other ways as well...in regular compliments on a job well-done, in several seasonal parties for the staff and in year-end bonuses--sometimes modest, but always given-- even if the year has obviously not been profitable for the school..
Cons
Enrollment fluctuation typical of the industry sometimes means lack of job security for new hires and (very rarely) a cut in hours for others, but even in that situation Manhattan Language acts with grace. Bonita Vander will maintain a class, for the sake of the teachers as well as the students, even when the class size is down to 2 students. Remarkable, for any school.
