Is this your company?

A good place to pass through, but you might not want to stay. - IT Management Mackenzie Investments Employee Review

Pros

The staff and junior management are friendly, hard working and dedicated to their job. Mackenzie takes customer service seriously and it reflects in the engagement of the line staff and management. The company has had some hard times and Senior management are working hard to make the best of a challenging market. Compensation is reasonable (mid-market) with some good benefits if you stay a while.

Cons

The mutual fund market has been saturated with alternatives, the banks are slowly dominating the market and driving out the independent managers. After years of financial market turbulence, investors are wary and many investors are retiring and want their money. In short, growth isn't happening, some hard decisions are being made and resources are tight. I worked in the IT division which has been systematically pruned and users vendors, off-shore service providers and contractors to fill its needs. That saves on training and development. IT management is ultimately dominated by the very conservative insurance sister companies so you become just a number with limited-to-nil opportunities for growth and development and an ever-present threat of layoffs.

Pros

You're surrounded by very intelligent people who know their stuff. They value amition and intelligence. They feed you a lot, which is nice.

Cons

Came into a new role and was expected to jump into work with little to no training and build expertise on things even my seniors did not know. Other employees were rude, dismissive and outright nasty to questions. Did not get to work with anyone closely and with long time staffers staying in their lane no one reached out to give direction for a new role. Expectations for my role were unclear and never communicated outright. I did ask what a typical 9-5 would look like during the interview process and never got a straight answer, which was a mistake on my part, but the onus is on the employer to give new hires direction and ensure they are fulfilling a role. A lot of training was "judgement calls'' but when new hires start they will not know the judgements they should be looking out for. Avoid!
