Pros

You will find you colleagues at MITRE to be highly professional people with deep levels of honesty and integrity. The support staff at MITRE (in Bedford & McLean) that helps global staff behind the scenes is also excellent.

Cons

MITRE is classified as a not-for-profit Federally Funded Research & Development Center (FFRDC). As such MITRE does not bid on or compete for contracts. Its funds are allocated by Congress and are disbursed by the government agencies that are its sponsors, supposedly to perform work that would be a conflict of interest for a private, for-profit Professional Services Contractor. However, in many cases, it is only at the dual headquarters of Bedford, MA and McLean, VA that one is likely to perform cutting edge research or systems engineering studies for the U.S. government. All too often, at other MITRE sites, the government customers (sponsors) see MITRE staff as completely interchangeable with the PSC staff that MITRE is not allowed to compete with. And to avoid losing government work and government dollars, MITRE management does not push back hard enough to enforce the bright line required by law. Although there were certainly reasons for my departure that were entirely my own fault, at least 40% of the reason, was that MITRE only paid lip service to my complaints that we were not being treated any differently than the other PSCs (such as Booz Allen Hamilton) that were supporting our U.S. Army sponsors. Although we held weekly MITRE teleconferences on this topic, there was no attempt to raise these issues with the U.S. Army civilian in charge of this particular group for fear of losing future sponsor opportunities.

Pros

Great diversity, quality of life and staff. Been with MITRE over 20 years.

Cons

Too many VP,s that are not held accountable. Company recently RIF'd 24 staff from FAA FFRDC, due to dropping gov't funding...yet company has significant number of VPs all sucking off of overhead. No attempt to manage money within the "leadership" ranks. Last year company went through a major business transformation...that failed...yet, VPs held staff accountable for reporting on a subpar system that lasted over 12 months. Could not even get business data to report to gov't for over 2 months, yet, person who was in charge of the business transformation is still at MITRE. If this happened to any other MITRE employee, they would've been gone. Oddly enough the person in charge of the business transformation is the CEOs brother. Amazing how that happens. He'll probably get a bonus because of his substandard performance. MITRE recently invested in opening up an office in Australia. All on company overhead. significant large numbers of VPs travelling out to "visit"...yet company has the audacity to reduce benefits as part of cost cutting measures. Company has now taken on a "for profit" mentality. It's all about delivery... so VPS and GMs can spend, spend, spend. Board of Directors should take a good look at what is happening and make some swift changes from the CEO on down. BOD should also implement an independent IG like entity to investigate what is seeming like waste, fraud and abuse by CEO, GMs and VPs. Time for the Fat Cats to get purged!!!
