The Good, The Bad, The Ugly - Mechanical Design Engineer MEP Engineering Employee Review

Pros

The Good - Good People(Except One): -They seem to hire a lot of good people that mean well, work hard, and are easy to get along with. If you get on a good team then you'll have a good working environment. Most of the teams are good but there's a bad apple of a lady that is friends with the owners/principles/HR that was the direct cause of at least 5 people exiting the company that worked directly with her. Anywhere else she probably would've been let go for underperformance and/or inappropriateness. -The leaders are approachable, friendly, and often seem to be putting their best forward.

Cons

The Bad - Disorganized Career Growth: - There's no standards of the company and everybody does things differently. They seem to be nearsighted with solving issues and they come up with new plans to solve the issues continuously but lack execution. There also seems to be no real upward career growth when you join. Essentially you will be a glorified drafter at best with no real path forward and no monetary compensation even though the selling point will be, "Your career growth is up to you and we reward hard workers." The resources available never have time to help with career growth and when they do it's often too disorganized. Frequently, engineers will get the time and signatures required for their Professional Engineer requirements and leave shortly after. Others will only stay about a year before realizing they're glorified drafters and seeing the writing on the wall. I saw a lot of really good employees leave because no matter how good they were they weren't moved up in position or compensation. The Ugly - High Turnover Rate and Expected OT: High turnover rate. It's a small company that sells itself as friendly/family and will reward hard workers. In reality, all of the principles of the company are actually family & friends. Meanwhile, everyone else seems disposable and their hard work is meaningless in terms of any real compensation. There's a very high turn over rate especially for such a small "family/friendly" company. - They'll sell a good work/life balance but then say that this is a 50-60hr/week industry. They expect you to work longer hours as they norm with no additional compensation for their already low salaries. But it's only half days Fridays?
