Pros
I love what I do! I adore the patients and the actual work. It’s so gratifying to be able to help people transit from this life comfortably and peaceably, and such an honor to support families through it all.
Cons
Well, here it is…the front line nurses are constantly and consistently overloaded. We are often forced into overtime. I’ve been with the company less than 2 years I kept hoping things would improve, because I love the work, but it’s clear it won’t. I’m going to have to leave. There have been multiple promises of “It will get better, we’re looking for another nurse, etc". In the meantime, they just keep admitting patients. I currently have 17, in a rural area where I have to travel up to 45minutes to get to a pt. 5/day is workable,(unless there’s deaths, complicated orders, etc), but 6 or 7/day is downright abusive. I want to work to live, not live to work. The pay is not comparable to other nursing jobs in the area. I’ve been booked (repeatedly) to work Sabbath (illegal, as it was a term of my employment.) There is absolutely no work-life balance. State law says it’s ILLEGAL to purposefully and consistently keep us in overtime. What gives? Honestly, I wish all the LHC nurses would band together and form a union, to ensure fair business practices and great patient care.
