Pros
Overall, the IRS is a very good place to work. I did a lot of forensic accounting/litigation support before going into management. The field experience and training is very good. Great work/life balance. With so many specialties, you can always finds an interesting position to apply for if you get bored.
Cons
You're not going to get rich. Experienced agent's, front line managers make b/w 100 and 130. Senior mgt a little more. Senior managers are usually the agents who were poor auditors and/or could not handle the field, so dealing with them on technical issues becomes very frustrating.
