Low hours, low pay, high standards - Convenience Store Clerk Hy-Vee Employee Review

Pros

The only upside is that if you have decent coworkers and the bosses are all gone it can sometimes be a little fun.

Cons

The saying "there's always something to do" is rampant here and none of these managers care that the pay is so low that expecting anyone to do constant work is not only unreasonable, but downright exploitation. You're expected to look happy at all times, even if something very reasonably upsets you, which makes customers feel so extremely entitled to your smiles that they get angry when you aren't all sunshine and rainbows. I have had customers yell at me and storm off for not sounding excited enough to be working holidays like Christmas and Easter. Nothing is done about sexual harassment from customers or employees either. Harassment being against the rules here is basically just a formality, as I have worked at 3 hyvee locations and that has always remained a problem.

Pros

I really enjoyed my coworkers and the management of the store. There were a handful of people who worked there at the time who weren't necessarily my favorite, but overall the team was good.

Cons

There we no significant cons. The pay is not the highest, but these are mainly entry level jobs.

Hy-Vee is a great company that truly cares about the communities we serve. Our 14 fundamentals drive both the customer and employee experience, guiding how we treat and serve our customers and each other. Leadership actively seeks employee feedback and uses it to drive meaningful change across all locations. There is a wide variety of jobs and career opportunities in many different areas of the company from retail to supply chain, IT, marketing, and so many more. obust employee benefits include tuition assistance for degrees, certifications, and foundational learning at little to no cost to employees, and the company focuses on promoting from within for most leadership roles.

Cons

As a 24/7 retail business, scheduling can be demanding in some roles — though the variety of positions means there's flexibility to find the right fit. With a large, decentralized workforce spread across hundreds of locations, consistent employee communication is an ongoing area of focus and improvement.
