Pros

HARRISCO is a translation and editing company in Seoul, South Korea. It uses international freelancers based in English-speaking countries to edit papers authored by Koreans. It is an advantage to work for this company remotely online.

Cons

The pay rate is very poor and loaded against international freelancers living in developed countries because the company uses Exchange Rate that is NOT favorable to editors. The CEO Moojin tries to secure the loyalty of the editors by paying in advance, but it is a losing proposition if you realize how hard the editors are expected to work and make a living. The editors need to work odd hours and try to please the clients of the company. And the manager only exploits the editors who complain about either the pay or the huge workload. Any complaints are ignored and only desperate people who cannot find any work elsewhere do these jobs. One editor by name Julia was not paid for 2 years, and had to work without pay. I have all the evidence to support my statement. If you are an American, the best thing is to work for an American employer and not for this Korean company.

Pros

I’ve been editing for Harrisco as a U.S. based editor for almost four years (with one year off). Early in that time there were certainly some issues with on-time payment for completed assignments – which was the reason for me taking a break. The company CEO continued to communicate periodically by email, promising all backpays would be completed and every month or so, deposits were made to my account in a good faith effort to ‘square the ledger’. The apparently genuine desire to fulfil its obligations, convinced me to resume taking assignments – in particular with a new payment system that didn’t require waiting until the end of the month. Payment now made by Paypal for each individual assignment. Since I re-started (about 18 months ago), all payments have been made strictly on time and furthermore ALL of the backpay was paid. I have heard the company had some difficulties, but that seems to have been resolved. My experience over the last year and a half has been extremely positive and all of my interactions with the company have convinced me, they are highly professional and reputable. Support staff in my case have been great – clear communication with them helps enormously, in terms of issues with how much work you can handle and deadlines. I am a part timer and only have limited number of hours to devote – and they have respected that.

Cons

None in my situation. As others have noted it would be good to have a higher payment rate.
