Revolving Door of General Dynamics SATCOM - Buyer/Planner General Dynamics Mission Systems Employee Review

Pros

General Dynamics SATCOM offers great products for the satellite industry. Their mix of both commercial and defense related items positions them to be a company that you could potentially stay with long term. They offer a decent benefits package.

Cons

Local corporate culture hugely favors profitability at the expense of really good people. There is no healthy balance between management and the employee base. HR does not have the resources to properly represent the employees. There is one HR manager responsible for two manufacturing facilities in two states with over 300 employees. Without proper HR representation, management often utilizes a free pass to make decisions based on the "good ol' boy" club. It is a very flat organization and opportunities for promotion are limited.

Pros

GD-MS seems to win *ALOT* of proposals and contracts. There is always the next big thing at GD-MS.

Cons

Contractors 411: Typically, contracts terminated with no notice. Today will be your last day. Please wrap up your work. It was a very low-rate contract too. Made alot of sacrifices to be on this program. Culture resembled a human wood-chipper ala FARGO. Many senior engineers leaving en-mass. I was asked to take over the role of the engineer who left just prior to my arrival. I called it: I will be next. Good experience once in your life to go thru the human wood-chipper. Toughens you up. However, GD-MS is a great example of how it is that legacy aerospace companies are dying rapidly and startups will be the future in aerospace.
