Pros
The GSL group is very multi-disciplinary and provide services in a variety of industries. There is a lot of work opportunity within the company. This company has the make up to be something really spectacular if leadership decides to move in positive direction
Cons
Unfortunately, at the GSL Group there is inadequate leadership. Executives and upper management have spoken inappropriately not only to staff, but of each other and ownership. Leadership is concerned with the net contribution of the budget but don’t take the appropriate time to understand what factors into the numerical data they obtain; giving them a very skewed and misdirected understanding of what is actually happening on a ground level. They are very isolated and do not communicate well with their subordinates; this consistently leads to information and proposed action to go up the chain of command as opposed to the other way around. Having worked with GSL, many managers and staff feel frustrated from the lack of communication, compassion and competency of the leaders of the company. GSL’s response to COVID-19 was abysmal, slow, and displayed inadequate attention to detail. GSL also has a complete lack of company infrastructure. Invoices are not paid by accounting until a minimum of 6 months and can sometimes be unpaid for well over a year. The company does not prioritize organization of administrative processes involved with payment. Staff in the accounting department are regularly confused. Local companies that supply services to sub-sectors of GSL quickly become alienated and cut GSL off from business as they are not confident in getting their money. Additionally, I did not have a single performance appraisal during my entire time there. There is no culture of accountability between staff. There were many staff who quit as things during COVID became more challenging and long-standing issues with GSL became too much for many staff. There was a massive rate of turnover. GSL only will reward staff when they realize that they are at the risk of losing them or are desperate to retain employees. GSL made one attempt on asking for feed back from myself in the years that I worked there. After voicing my concerns for the section of company that I was responsible for, there was zero follow up on things that would only take a matter of days to execute to make a big difference. The GSL Group is decently sized company on the western side of Canada and have many employment positions. If you are looking to get relevant experience in the interim, it is a good place to work but it is by no means a career destination. You will not get rewarded or progress your career because the upper management is too hyper focused on hitting financial quotas for monthly and annual deadlines by cutting corners and parts of the budget. They will continue to stifle themselves with ego and it was a very toxic place to work.
