Pros
-The work is often easy, and will not be overwhelming if your work ethic is good.
-The staff, including the managers, are usually very sociable, and friends are quickly found.
-My fondest memories are those of my managers - they're very forgiving people and will not fire you for mistakes; they even have a hard time firing people who walk out on a busy day.
-There's a lot of money flowing through the restaurant throughout the week (particularly the weekends); with some waiters making upwards of 250 on good days.
Cons
-Competitive waiters will often blame you, the host, for empty tables... on slow days.
-On busy days, waiters will ask you to do their job for them, and still collect the tips.
-Sometimes the bussers have a hard time keeping the tables clear of dishes, and thus often ask you for help. It's normal if it's a table or two - but very annoying when you end up clearing an entire isle of tables because they're "on a cigarette break."
-Sometimes it's difficult to properly balance between the many responsibilities given to a host (managing the register, packaging to-go orders, cleaning the bathroom, doors, and windows, and introducing guests to their tables). Time management skills and focus are an absolute necessity if you want to be a host without losing your mind.
-Expect to make full use of any and all social skills at your disposal; negotiation, de-escalation, and flattery are your best tools.
