Pros
Of the ten EPA Regions, Region 1 has a reputation for hard work and innovation. This reputation is partly earned to the innovative nature of New England states, which also strive to craft new strategies for tackling environmental problems. Consequently, new environmental initiatives, tools and programs are born in New England with surprising frequency. The majority of Region 1 EPA staff are highly educated and share a mission-oriented view of their job, meaning that they work for more than the money, they want to make a difference in the world. Other pros include a family-friendly schedule that allows staff to come early and leave early or telecommute.
Cons
The salary at EPA, while higher than nonprofit organizations, is less than those offered by private sector jobs. The federal government is also shrinking due to the ongoing Sequestration so it's very hard to get a job and even harder (practically impossible) to advance in the organization. More disconcerting, is the internal red-tape, slow pace of change, and increasing paralysis due to concerns of negative political attacks. Despite this, smart people working together do offer value to communities and businesses.
