Pros

Very few. Some training although usually irrelevant to your role. Work experience.

Cons

A very very poor company to work for. Basically echo the views of similar poor reviews of this company. Especially as a “trainee”, the pay is minimal at £17500. Trainees can be experienced professionals familiar to office/work environment or school leavers. No matter how much work or progress or money you make the company, you will receive the minimal standard 6 monthly pay rise of £500. They will string you along and tell you that if you provide evidence you will be “fast tracked”. This is blatantly untrue and the management will never deviate from this standard pay scale. Once you have signed up as a trainee you are contractually obligated to pay back £3500 if you leave the company within the first 6 months of employment. If you leave between 6 months and 12 months; you pay back £700. It is claimed that the cost of the training however in my experience I received no training as a trainee. They claim to be a very people orientated company which was the main appeal to me about the company. Unfortunately you realise very quickly you are a cheap resource who’s only job is to get as many billable days in for the company as possible. After (minimum) 3-6 months for trainees with no experience in the industry prior to working with Edge, you are then advertised to clients as an experienced software tester unbeknownst to the client. Career advancement is not applicable. If you feel you have achieved all you can on a particular client site or project your request to further your skills elsewhere is ignored. The only time any senior employee will get in touch with you is when you haven’t sent in your timesheet or when you hand in your notice. When you are on client site and are asked to attend management meetings or mandatory Quarterly meetings, these are on your own time. This is not the case with other vendors but does seem like Edge will agree to client demands over wishes or well being of employees. As a permanent member of staff you will not be paid if you are sick for between 1-3 days. More than 3 days you will be paid statutory sick pay. This is not disclosed at the interview stage. You get all the drawbacks of contracting with none of the benefits. Pension is also extremely poor. I can only speak of my own experience with this company and could never in good faith recommend that you work directly for this company. The pretence of an employee friendly work place when on client site and the untruths you are told regarding low employee turnover are particularly disappointing. I feel it is important for anyone applying to work for this company to be aware what employees of the company have experienced.

We are disappointed that Edge did not meet up to your expectations as an employer and we would like to address some of your comments. Edge Academy Edge are proud of our Edge Academy scheme and our Investors in Young People Gold Award. At Edge we aim and offer our trainees attractive long-term opportunities. We believe it is appropriate that graduate programmes have a financial tie in as it can be costly for companies to train individuals only to lose them before their new skills can be utilised and impact the investment in programmes in the future. Additionally, unlike many other graduate and training schemes Edge pay a salary from day one of employment and not after the completion of training. Around 30% of trainees have fast-tracked a graduated earlier than the 2 years as they demonstrated exceptional skills, motivation and positive behaviours both within Edge and with our clients. We also have invested time and effort in our career framework which is available to all staff to help give direction to progress their career. This is supported by a career mentor where a colleague is available to discuss objectives and aspirations. Sick Pay We have a sick pay policy an extract is below (which is also in your contact of employment): We have a contractual sick/injury pay scheme which, on completion of a successful probationary period, provides payment during periods of certificated sickness for 20 days in any 12-month period. However, in line with SSP no payment of contractual sick/injury pay will be made for the first 3 days of any absence. For any certified sickness in excess of 20 days, you may be entitled to Statutory Sick Pay, providing you meet the eligibility criteria.

Pros

Its hard to see any of the positives. Lets get one this straight, Edge are a Consultancy, therefore when an employee is at Client site then they do not have any control of any flexibility, ie start times, working from home etc. The staff make it work, they are good at their jobs and most of them are good to work with. Depending on the contract you do get some flexibility, work from home, start times etc The company pay for your qualifications, which is good and they do offer a semi decent in house training programme, with some proper control could work well. Good place to get some experience and then move on, experienced staff get payed well.

Cons

Management seem to make up the rules as they go along to suit what they need and they sell it of "BUSINESS NEEDS", thats pretty much there get out of jail card. An example of this is travel expenses, some people get it some dont and they just make it up as they go along. The contract is 37hrs a week but they knowingly put you in client site who want a minimum of 37.5 hours a week, you are expected just to do it. When company have compulsory training / meetings you need to make the time back (they argue it was not there decision and its client) No Sick pay for first 4 days and then for 3 weeks full pay (not the worst thing but can live with that)

Thank you for taking the time to write a review. We are pleased that you pointed out that our training programme is good. You have recognised that we are a consultancy and as such expect a level of flexibility around working hours to deliver the best service we can to our clients and our contract of employment does state that normal hours of work are 37 per week, Monday to Friday or as required to satisfy the needs of the business and our client. We do discuss working hours and flexibility at interview stage. In return for commitment Edge believes we do offer a competitive salary and excellent training and development opportunities and offer a MINIMUM of 5 days training per year to our employees. Our training schedule and course catalogue is continually being updated and is based on research into needs of digital job roles, our clients and our staff’s personal development plans. We do carry out employee surveys to try and get feedback and we encourage staff to speak to their managers at the one to ones to so we can continue to improve.
