Pros

Working with the kids was amazing but you can do that at any other school! (I've heard good things about YAI)

Cons

ZERO training, which is problematic considering the challenging behaviors that some students have SUPER gossipy. I would hear teachers talking about other teachers, supervisors, and teacher assistants. The teachers suck. One time I heard two teachers talking loudly about how one of the children's mother drank alcohol well into the pregnancy. The child, with fetal alcohol syndrome, was in the room. She was old enough to understand what they were saying, I know this. I also expressed to one teacher that I wanted to go into teaching myself and she LITERALLY said "pick another career" and then proceeded to tell me how the job drains you. This was in front of all of the students... Also it's pretty dangerous how they react to reports on misdemeanors. One of the TAs reported something apparently, and I heard whispers about her for weeks after. One day one of the teachers warned her co teacher that this TA was going to be coming to their classroom and said to "be careful of what you say". Need I say more?

Pros

It's a rewarding job taking care of people with IDD/DD. Relatively flexible schedule depending on family.

Cons

Little to no regulations for the family to follow, and some families do take advantage of staff, caregiver burnout
