Pros

Great people and culture. It’s a little weird and nerdy, but never boring. The direction we’re heading feels exciting, and new ideas are always encouraged and supported.

Cons

Unless you’re based in SF, it’s easy to get left behind. While the company remains remote-friendly in theory, the culture has increasingly favored in-office employees. Those onsite benefit from perks like free lunches, events, and closer team access — as well as greater internal mobility and advancement opportunities. Compensation is below market for SF tech, and benefits are average. Attrition has become a growing concern, and HR has yet to take visible steps toward improving retention.

Pros

Working at Descript for a little over four years was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. The culture is exceptional; this is a company that genuinely encourages you to have opinions, take initiative, and contribute beyond the boundaries of your job description. If you're the type of person who wants to make an impact rather than just clock in and execute tasks, Descript is an environment where that instinct is recognized and rewarded. The career growth opportunities reflect this as well. When you show up with ownership and drive, the company notices and invests back in you.

Cons

At times things could feel unclear or ambiguous, but in hindsight this was largely a reflection of where the company was in its growth stage when I joined. It's the nature of early stage startups, and honestly navigating that ambiguity ended up being part of what made the experience so valuable professionally.
