Awful company ran by delusional, greedy, and unethical people. Glad others are speaking out. - Senior Manager CompassX Consulting Employee Review

Pros

The free Thanksgiving meals we’ve gotten the past few years were nice.

Cons

CompassX clap for taking advantage of government relief funds and employees! You can actually see that Kyle took out a $500k PPP loan during COVID but still laid people off anyway and some were furloughed. He never shared anything about this with employees and we for sure did not feel the effects an extra $500k of cash would’ve brought in. I wouldn’t be surprised if he kept that money for himself. Most of these loans were forgiven so he probably didn’t even have to pay it back. The Fed had a study that found that 75% of these loans didn’t go to the employees and were pocketed. I would bet my money that the owner isn’t in the 25% that used the money to help his employees. The loan and this Fed study are both public so go see for yourself. Company leaders act like they know better than everyone else but all they do is talk in buzzwords and send out bad slides they spent 5 minutes making. Good to know they take the biggest cut out of everyone’s work by adding 0 value whatsoever while the rest of us are left alone to sink or swim on our projects. There is no growth. You can do a great job and your client can love you to death but these guys will come up with BS metrics to keep you from getting a bonus/pay bump/promotion. I received pennies or nothing after every performance review even when I far exceeded the hours they wanted me to work. Anyone you see that gets promoted just sucks up to leadership. Too many dumb in-person things they want us to do. There are Slacks every 2 weeks with some kind of gathering or a request for someone to plan one. If you want us to bill more stop making us get drinks all the time and let us work. Subpar benefits. Not a lot of PTO which you get guilt tripped for taking. Insurance coverage is not great but you have a lot of choices and it’s getting better I guess. There are no other worthwhile perks working at CompassX.

As someone who is ultimately responsible for the decisions impacting cash flow and treasury functions, the PPP program was a great success. At CompassX, during what was a once-in-a-one-hundred-year black swan event, the PPP loan was used to pay and retain impacted employees and then hire anew as the business environment improved. Audits and reviews were performed by the Small Business Association, a prominent regional bank, and a national CPA firm to ensure appropriate controls and compliance. Ultimately, I needed to personally guarantee any loans with my family’s personal assets. As with any government assistance program, there will always be fraud and mis-use. I hope those cases are discovered and prosecuted to prevent inappropriate allocation of taxpayer dollars. CompassX was a net positive job-creator during that season of uncertainty, exactly what the PPP program set out to do. Towards the tail end of the pandemic, a majority of our employees wanted more opportunities to meet up (both informal and formal). These events are always optional and allow us to build intra-company relationships, recognize the great work our team members achieve, and have fun! At CompassX our most important core value was and remains “Team & Family.” We will always strive to present opportunities for people to connect to build an inclusive, team-centric culture despite being part of an industry that tends to be physically remote and decentralized. - Kyle Heppenstall, Founder and President

Pros

I joined CompassX from a mid-sized consulting firm and so far it's been a great move. I feel like my perspectives and experience are valued and are seen as a benefit to the company, and the people who I work with really seem to care. The work itself feels meaningful, with interesting projects where each win (big or small) seems to have a big impact and celebrated by everyone. Since joining, the practice areas seem to be evolving and maturing, and I've been able to sharpen my skills by being pushed outside my comfort zone at times. Unlike my last company, there are no mandatory CompassX office days, but I know where the leaders or colleagues are each week if I want to meet in person. I've also enjoyed the in person events and other team meet ups,

Cons

As it's a small firm, sometimes there can be missing pieces or gaps e.g. there aren’t always standardized tools, predefined templates or playbooks like at larger consultancies. Sometimes this means more freedom to do things your own way, but can be frustrating if starting from scratch too often. The teams are pretty lean so work can get busy for short bursts of time to meet client expectations. Also need to be willing to wear multiple hats or flex into other areas to keep the show on the road.

Thank you for the thoughtful review – we’re so glad to hear your experience at CompassX has been a meaningful one so far. Creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and challenged is crucial to us, so it’s great to hear that this is reflected in your experience. We also appreciate your perspective on where we can continue to evolve – as a growing firm, we know there’s still work to do in building out more structure and tools. Thanks again for being part of the journey – we’re lucky to have you on the team! - CompassX Team
