Pros

I have a great supervisor who is very laid back. All of my coworkers are nice and supportive. No micromanaging but everyone gets the job done.

Cons

Sometimes the patrons can be very difficult and will burn you out but that has nothing to do with the company, just the nature of the job.

Pros

Very competitive wages compared to public libraries in the area, in large part thanks to the union. No evening shifts. Generous PTO. The library seems to be hiring in all positions left and right, so there are many opportunities for advancement or to move to a branch closer to home. Aside from the general duties of a public service staff (faxing, processing materials, library card sign-ups, customer service), you can make this job what you'd like. If you love working with kids, you can plan fun programs for children. If you love knitting, start a knitting circle! Depending on your branch, you may have a lot of down time, and it's a great opportunity to plan programs that center around community interests. You will get to know your regular patrons, so if you love getting to know your community and if helping people at their best and worst makes motivates you, this job is for you!

Cons

Working every other Saturday, inflexible hours, some frustrating patrons, too much complaining from some long-time staff members. Management can vary from branch to branch, which can make your experience more positive or negative.

Pros

- pay isn't horrible - good benefits - some people working there were actually pleasant to be around

Cons

One review said "Staff of color often encounter microaggressions", and this is 1000% true. Another review said "Management can sometimes be inconsistent, micromanaging, or unsupportive" and I will also agree this is 100% true. Ironically most of the employees are people of color, but you will still face microaggressions. Ultimately it depends on who your coworkers are and who is managing you. But there are micromanagers who do not listen to you and do not care for your well being which is unfortunate because that makes people not stay for long (with the exception of managers and higher up positions of course)
