Pros

Pretty flexible with scheduling in advance, particularly if you're a student at one of the nearby universities. Great way to get insight into the medical world, specifically emergency medicine. Excellent way to get hours for med school, PA school, nursing school, etc. Some limited patient contact. There are ways to pick up extra shifts to get paid more in a week.

Cons

Hospitals are open 24/7, which means you'll work some night shifts; not inherently a bad thing but can be rough on the sleep schedule. You work between three different hospitals at varying distances to your home location (usually Williamsburg or Newport News/Norfolk), which means the commute can be long and expensive over time. Short-notice call-outs are acceptable, but they prefer for you to get your shift traded/covered, which can be difficult since it relies entirely on one of your coworkers bailing you out.

Pros

Scrub stipend, compassionate management, flexible with scheduling

Cons

Average hourly wage, the hospital I was working at was undergoing a switch from a different scribe company to ChartJoy so the transition process was rough because they were not aware of how the ED docs worked with scribes

Pros

ER docs were wonderful and had no part of the company

Cons

Horrible management, very unorganized, took about 3 months to actually get onboarded
