Pros
Chalk.com has a great environment that encourages learning, personal growth, and teamwork. It has a great work environment and I enjoy going to work almost every day. The people at Chalk are always willing to help with any issues I've encountered and encourage asking questions and trying to better yourself.
Cons
The company is still in the startup phase and there have been some tough learnings and instability in the past few years. Overall the company has overcome them but the startup environment is not perfect for everyone.
Pros
People When I'm asked to describe the people I work with at Chalk, I never refer to them as my "co-workers." That's because to me, many of the people here are close friends and mentors. People I learn from, people who challenge me, but also people whom I enjoy spending time with - both inside and outside of the office. If you work at Chalk, you're passionate in some way about the education space, and that is reflected in every single person here. Nobody is here because it's a "job that pays the bills," because quite frankly, there are easier and likely higher-paying jobs to seek out. The people here care about what they do, and the opportunity they have to meaningfully make an impact, and that shows. It's contagious, inspiring, and motivating. Growth I've learned more in the last 4 years that I've been at Chalk than I have at any previous time in my life. And it's so much more than "professional skills" or on-the-job "technical proficiency." While I have most definitely grown professionally (that's something that Chalk focuses on and ensures each employee has the opportunity to grow in their role), I have grown even more as a person. Sure, I understand that I'm fortunate to have started when there were just a few people, which meant I had the opportunity to grow into different roles over the years. But as much as Chalk encourages and supports professional growth, it probably supports and encourages personal growth even more. It sounds a little silly, but someone once said that "Chalk makes people better people." 4 years and a lot of self-reflection later, I couldn't agree more. Impact I think it's rare to wake up every morning excited about the opportunity to make an impact. And it doesn't have to be as grand as "changing the world" overnight, it might simply be working on a product feature that over 200 thousand teachers will use to make their lesson planning a little bit easier. Or maybe it's the chance to help even a single teacher figure out an issue over the live chat. Either way, from the macro to the micro, I feel like I get to meaningfully make the education space just a little bit better each day, and that more than anything is why I wanted to work at Chalk, and why I still love working here today.
Cons
If you're looking to work at a place where every single person has "been there, done that," then Chalk probably isn't for you. While Chalk has done a great job bringing on a more senior leadership team to help guide the company direction and help grow the leadership capability of the leaders who are less experienced, many of us are relatively early in our careers, and that means that we don't have all the answers to all the questions and challenges that we will continue to face along the way. While some such as myself might find that exciting, I recognize that for many that will seem scary, as neither success nor stability are guaranteed. On a more tangible level, one of Chalk's main challenges over the past few years has been finding a successful and repeatable business model that will not only allow the company to be financially sustainable, but support our ambitions for the ability to have even greater impact in the future. Unfortunately I don't think we are there yet, but I do think we are getting close. But again, there is still a tangible risk that we haven't found true product-market fit with a repeatable business model to support it.
