A large publishing company that offered some great experiences ... but with continuous change and heavy workloads. - Anonymous employee Cengage Employee Review

Pros

The small group that I worked with was wonderful! I would always say that the people I worked with was what kept me coming back on a daily basis - that never changed. I also thought that the benefit packages they offered were pretty competitive - I liked the 4 different plan options, and they did their best to not hike up the premiums each year, and take some of it on as a Company.

Cons

When the leadership team changed (CEO and Executive Team) in September 2012, the culture and everything about the company really changed. While I understand that a large company like that needs to make some significant changes to move forward and grow ... the pace that those changes took place, and the lack of thought about process and who all of these changes would effect, just wasn't for me. With the CEO's mantra of "Speed, Focus and Collaboration" - I really feel like "speed" was the only thing that the executive team really focused on. The work load was pretty heavy, and with the continuous org-changes - the folks left behind were left with even more work.

Pros

Company has some interesting approaches to the market and in the past they seemed value employees. There are some good employees there and there was, in the past, visionary leadership, but the people with the vision and leadership skills left the company a few years ago.

Cons

The company actively de-values employees. They had a project they called "Project Horizon" where they told all employees they needed to cut costs, so the company was going to have multiple layoffs over 3-5 years - but nobody was allowed to know when, where, or why - - just one day large swaths of people would be gone. That hung over everyone's heads - for years, and is indicative of how Cengage values employees - it doesn't. Everything is about trying to secure new funding and prepare for an IPO, so they stopped investing significantly in the products about 3 years ago and that's about when they stopped acting like they cared about employee wellness as well.
