I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Cengage's mission + their product/service offerings make it a fulfilling career. Senior management is transparent, open to innovation, and idea sharing. They embrace collaboration, learning, and positivity. If you are on the field side, they offer great flexibility and autonomy with your schedule. If you are a fast learner, a hard worker, and open to constant change, this is a great company for you. There is a significant amount of turnover/restructuring which allows for upward movement to middle management, especially if you are willing to relocate.

    Cons

While Cengage has had some great ideas, employees and resources are spread extremely thin. You will work HARD. Resources promised to you may not exist and features/products promised to the client may take months or even years to roll out making your responsibilities tough to complete. There is not often a clear delineation of responsibilities or ownership and initiatives tend to get muddled by too many cooks in the kitchen, if you will. If you are the best at what you do, Cengage needs you but the reality is there is only a small chance you will be rewarded/compensated appropriately. It's a great place to work to build a diverse skillset and feel included, but not as good for a long term career. Hansen does what is right for the company in the long run, but often times the middle men will suffer in the short term.

    Advice to Management

Reward those who make the wheels turn and make good on your promises. You hire some excellent people who burn the midnight oil to achieve the company initiatives, but end up frustrated, burnt out, and taking offers from competitors due to lack of action and/or compensation from senior leaders. The biggest reason for delays in product releases, decreases in sales revenue, and poor delivery is turnover (followed by lack of resources).

I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great CEO, decent benefits, 3 months maternity and paternity, good communication from management team

    Cons

Tough industry, lack of coherent strategy from higher ed product team, recent layoffs with likely more coming after McGraw merger, compensation not competitive

    Advice to Management

Keep open communication, be more clear about layoffs, avoid layoffs that don't match performance, be wary of creating a product leadership team built of the "old guard" vs. embracing change-makers

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Decent product (print) Great colleagues Flashy/expensive headquarters Company likes to spend big money on parties

    Cons

Terrible digital product Terrible marketing team Terrible middle/upper management Company is terribly cheap in all of the wrong areas (salary/benefits/perks) Did I mention terrible management? Employees mean nothing to Cengage. You are a number to them, not a person.

    Advice to Management

You need to learn your market. You have FAR too many bean counters, and not enough people who understand educational sales. You also need to pay people what they're worth. Management is a white boy's club. Your products reflect this pervasive & toxic attitude.

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

The working atmosphere was great. Great people throughout the company at all levels. People enjoyed being there. If you hit bonus, nice payouts.

    Cons

Cengage Unlimited isn't holding up to the pedestal it was put on by upper management. Too much money being lost every quarter has turned it into a not so fun place to be at. Lots of cuts over the years, especially last month has turned it into a skeleton crew doing the same amount of work, if not more.

    Advice to Management

    Pray the merger goes through.

I have been working at Cengage full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Work from home once a month, 4% 401k match, decent time off, good company culture

    Cons

There are only about 2 times of the year to really bring in sales so be ready for pressure. The processes inside are tedious and slow down the sales process.

    Advice to Management

    Simplify the sale process

I worked at Cengage full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Some of the best people I have ever worked with are at Cengage. Most people are passionate about the company's mission. Free snacks, free gym, free beer on tap, company wide social events.

    Cons

The people in leadership are clueless and lack empathy. I have never been a part of an organization who is so careless and unorganized when it comes to lay offs. You would think they would be experts in it considering all of the cuts they have made in the last year, but unfortunately that was not the case this time. HR is also extremely disorganized and treats people as if they are disposable regardless of how many years they have dedicated to the company.

I worked at Cengage full-time for less than a year

    Pros

The employees at Cengage (from the top down) truly care about the customer - students and teachers. The culture is one of transparency, honesty, and purpose. The purpose/mission being - lower the cost of education.

    Cons

The mission of the company is admirable, but they are struggling in their transition from a publisher of content to a software company. Be careful getting caught in the ups/downs of this transition.

    Advice to Management

Pay your people market value. They believe in the mission. Don't take advantage of their kindness. As you transition to a software company, pick leaders who care about the employees, as much as the customer. Leaders focused on making a name for themselves will destroy the company from the inside out.
