Pros

Wonderful clients, hard working employees

Cons

Camp Summit is as stated on the website a "sleep away" camp for individual's with disabilities of a variety of needs and ages. They provide a week long recreational camping experience. I have been working special education for 6 years when I arrived at Camp Summit, I highly recommend never working or sending a client to this camp, ever. As an employee I saw fellow employees being harassed constantly, and reports of that harassment being disregarded as "attention seeking". For example on a dress up day there were 2 employees who had previously dated, the one who had been 'dumped' dressed up as the other making fun of the other girl all day. When I spoke to HR about what was happening, I was told she is a 'drama queen' and 'thankfully leaving soon'. This is a consistent attitude from the management which leads to a lot of turn over in the staff because they are being harassed. The safety standard at this camp is also low. For example, a camper was hospitalized after attending camp because her g-tube was cleaned by the nursing staff with hand sanitizer. This kind of care is unacceptable but the result of poor hiring and overworked nurses. Another camper and counselor were injured because the staff refused to use a side saddle for the horse program. During my 2 months at Camp Summit I saw campers consistently being injured more than any other setting I had ever witnessed. This was not because of bad counselors, it is in large part because of the amount of work that is expected of these counselors. They are constantly short-staffed and not supported by the management. The management constantly gossiped, frequently making racist and homophobic comments about staff.
