Pros

Occasional perks that don't significantly enhance employee's morale, satisfaction, or happiness A place to learn subpar practices, forcing you to realize why there are certain best practices in place in other great companies

Cons

Lack of transparency in the hiring process. There was a good amount of bad hires which could have been prevented if the rest of the team was involved. However, they didn't think it was necessary for a small company to get along with the other individuals being added on. This greatly affected the teams morale. Lack of merit-based promotions. Promotion seems arbitrary, hard to project individual growth trajectory within the company. Overall, the company is not scaling well. The company is still considered small but we're being asked to do unimagined tasks without any room to fail. Be prepared to jump off a cliff because there's not gonna be any cushion waiting for you. High velocity, low burn? More like high velocity, high burn. You would see your team mates burned out left and right. Is there a learning culture? Sure, maybe the initial trainings in your first week or month but afterwards, you're on your own. Make a mistake and be prepared to be flamed and belittled like a child. You'd start to question your career and placement in life. How's that for career growth?

Thank you for sharing your feedback about working at BentoBox. We’re sorry to hear about your negative experience at the company. We deeply value transparency. We are constantly improving communication methods so each team member is informed, involved, and aware of all company processes and decisions. We appreciate each team member’s flexibility with the recruiting process, and acknowledge that as a rapidly growing startup, some mis-hires can and have been made. We continuously iterate on our hiring processes to ensure that we bring on the right candidates who boost morale instead of detract from it. This includes making sure that employees at all levels within the organization are able to weigh in on hiring decisions via interviews, job shadows, and informal coffee meetings with candidates. We’re also evolving our review and promotion process so everyone has clear goals and a growth plan by 2020. Thank you again for your feedback, it only makes us better.

Pros

Some talented and passionate teammates who genuinely care about the product and customers. The hospitality-focused mission is meaningful in theory, and a few individuals are doing their best despite constant changes in direction. The engineering talent is strong, though underutilized due to a lack of clear leadership and focus.

Cons

Frequent shifts in product strategy without clear communication or accountability. Leadership often lacks product expertise and alignment, which creates confusion, burnout, and rework. Decisions are made reactively, with little regard for long-term vision or employee input. Growth opportunities are limited—especially for those outside of leadership’s inner circle. Feedback is often dismissed or reframed in a way that makes employees question their own experience. The culture can feel performative and driven by appearances rather than genuine collaboration or respect.
