A lot of hats and not a lot of pay - Zoo Educator BREC Employee Review

Pros

The staff at the zoo and BREC as a whole are all wonderful. The organization does a great job with the onboarding process, both in terms of knowing what you'll be doing in your position and knowing about the organization. The volunteers for the education department are also all great at what they do.

Cons

The pay was not competitive. For a full-time zoo educator, it was less than $15 an hour. There were also expectations of performing many different duties, including, but not limited to, animal care (cleaning, diet preparation, and enrichment), scheduling programs and organizing their payment, and leading programs at the zoo and off-grounds.

Pros

Working with kids and horses was truly rewarding at times. Some flexibility in your schedule, depending on who was in charge. The facility is big enough to have a lot of cool programs if they can get the right management.

Cons

Management was not good about listening to instructor concerns, even around basic safety. Not all horses were safe for beginner kids but we were expected to act as if they were. Clear favoritism amongst the staff which led to some students getting more opportunities. Trails and cross country course were largely unkempt and unsafe to use.
