Noble Mission, Toxic Culture - Anonymous employee BLACKDOCTOR Employee Review

Back when I was first considering joining BDO, I was told by a former employee “Only take the job if you don’t have another one lined up.” Thinking they were being jaded from their own experience, I took it with a grain of salt. I was mistaken. While BDO’s mission to help connect black people with quality healthcare is noble and worth praise, the company’s execution of this mission leaves much to be desired. The company has a massive online following which lets it get away with a lot of practices and behaviors that it shouldn’t be able to. It's clear that the company is far more interested in getting money from pharma companies and grants than anything else. Leadership is either far too involved or not involved enough on projects and doesn’t support a quality work/life balance by expecting staff to be available 24/7 and on holidays. As a small company, you’ll often be asked to do tasks well outside of your job description/pay scale/abilities, but depending on your perspective, that can either be positive or negative. But too much of any good things can become bad. Lastly, there’s a long list of questionable ethics and company values that start with leadership and trickle all the way down and result in built-up frustration, low team morale, and even public shaming. The lack of reviews I found for BDO played a role in my accepting a position with them too hastily, but I hope this review helps someone else think twice before doing the same.
