Pros
BKBM Is a small firm where the owners and principals are genuinely concerned with the continuing education of their employees. Managers and owners are aware of and compassionate towards conflicts with personal life and work, and allow plenty of leeway when juggling both.
Management does an excellent job of talking to employees and helping them decide what type of projects they like best and actually putting them on those projects so that you gain the experience you are looking for.
Owners and principals are very helpful and are always available for questions and they push you to excel and help you understand fully your work. BKBM Spends a lot of money each year sending their employees to seminars and classes. Once you gain your PE they have an excellent program in place to train you in Project Management.
Cons
It is a small firm, and while this is good for many reasons, it also means that the pay is slightly less than what you typically find at a larger firm.
The variety of projects are also more limited to small office and retail, and buildings generally under 7 stories or so. Thus for a structural engineer looking to move on to larger more complex structures, those opportunities are severely limited if non-existent. This makes BKBM an excellent company for structural engineers looking to further their careers in small office, schools, retail etc. but a poor choice for those structural engineers looking to go into other areas of structural engineering such as bridges, large vertical structures, structural vibration analysis etc.
BKBM has a structural department and a civil department. For those looking to work in their civil department, be aware that it is quite small, and thus civil projects are quite limited in scope and variety. As BKBM is primarily a structural firm, budget cuts are generally made in the civil department first.
