Although the company encourages a multidisciplinary mindset, the truth is that as a consultant, time is money, and you should stick to your lane. It was impossible for me to diversify my portfolio within the company, even after internally networking with many, many people. If you enjoy environmental remediation, both before a remediation system is constructed (air, water, and soil sampling/monitoring), during (oversight of subcontractor work, i.e., standing around), or after (more air, water, and soil sampling/monitoring), then this field is for you. The office work is rote and monotonous after awhile, and mostly involves dry technical writing and administrative scheduling for future sampling/monitoring/remediation events. Unfortunately, the space to innovate within the environmental consulting field is very small, as I see it.
