Pros

I’ve only been with Applied for six months now, so maybe my review is biased with a bit of honeymoonitis. But I’ve also worked at several companies and see a positive difference here. For starters, there are some reviews stating that pay here is low. But I think management gets that this stigma exists and has worked hard to address it. They understand that they need to be competitive with compensation in order to gain and maintain good folks. I actually make more at Applied than I did at a similar position in downtown Chicago. No complaints here on that front. Their efforts to keep good people shows. I really enjoy my coworkers! The work environment is very positive and focused on continuous improvement as we knock out our work. Sure, there’s times when we have a problem with a product or new methods needing some ironing out. But the people here come together to create solutions in a fun and engaging manner. I’ve been very impressed with the transparency and openness of senior management too. They work hard to keep everyone in the loop, engaged in our growth and defining a fun and open culture. They are constantly giving back to staff allowing us to share in our success. These things make contributing here fun. I get excited to come to work and jump in. There’s a clearer vision about where this company is heading than others. I feel like I know how to lend a hand and enjoy helping those around me.

Cons

-While I’m still new and learning, I wish I knew more about our products. I’d like to know Epic and TAM as well as I know Word or Facebook. -I’m hoping some new social events will allow for more family involvement. Short of Employee Flashcards I’d need to whip up, it’d be great if there was a way for my wife to meet my coworkers.

Pros

Appears ot be an innovative company from the outside. Lots of access to customers and research. Strong upper management push for new tech initiatives. New CEO might clean it up.

Cons

There is a hierarchy of UX designers with titles that separate them in skills and respect in the org. I was not allowed to really contribute or engage and was actively silenced because of my title as SR. I was not a Lead and Principles UX designer. I was shocked. Leadership appears disengaged with designers at EZLynx division, with a major transition happening at the top. The product team holds disproportionate control over UX decisions, including managing UX staff directly. The UX org has 5 hierarchical tiers UX including UX management, which creates significant bottlenecks. I came in with 15 years of experience and after two months - I was unable to do my job because of the harassment from a fellow designer. I found the environment hostile to UX professionals. After filing an HR complaint about harassment isolation, public claims that I did not know how to do my job. I was fire the next day in retaliation. They are being investigated. Not recommended for experienced UX practitioners who are looking to the future of AI and UX design as a step toward future software development.
