Pros

The team is young and highly diverse with team members from different countries. So there is a diverse mix of people passionate about the field they work in. If you want to be surrounded by top notch talent, we're talking very intelligent, kind people in a smaller company setting, you've probably found a good match. The CEO is French, so some may perceive cultural differences from that - lunches tended to run long. If you come from somewhere where you just ate lunch alone at your desk while working, it's not the expectation here. Compared to other small employers in the NYC area, I think the benefits were excellent - long vacation time, premium insurance, and now I understand there's a 401K. You will also have a large workspace. For non-Americans, the company is really willing to help with visas.

Cons

During my time at Altanova, it always seemed that the company struggled to articulate what exactly they do or a set identity outside of the word "sustainability". Even then, not all of the project work necessarily concerned "sustainability". Employees should be able to give a 30-second elevator pitch to explain to someone what a company does, there wasn't one and that reflected in the business. Management needs to double down on creating a set, achievable vision or identity for the company to grow. Because there are so many smart people involved in the company, discussions routinely went on on for hours without takeaway or follow through. Also, while I think the large workspace is great - the building housing the office and the office space itself sometimes left a lot to be desired.

Pros

-Mentors are willing and motivated to teach -Team is highly knowledgeable -Supportive environment that welcomed curiosity -Allowed for exploration of individual interests outside the internship responsibilities (ex: working with other teams) -Allotted time for learning new skills and acquiring certifications (ex: OSHA 10 training)

Cons

-Steep learning curve for those not previously involved in NYC sustainability standards -Due to the fact that many team members work remotely and across different time zones, there were instances when communication was challenging, leading to some misalignment in understanding/expectations -Noticed that there was a sense of frustration about disorganization, I don't think I was there long enough to understand the extent -I was the only intern during 2024 summer, I believe that having another intern in the office would have enhanced the experience

Pros

Lots of freedom to explore different ideas, everybody is super passionate about the industry. Small team so everyone is close.

Cons

Business offerings vary a lot seasonally so hard to develop expertise in one specific topic. Growth beyond the first few years is slow.
