Pros

Best pay of any internship I have found so far Great resume' booster Tons of learning opportunities

Cons

While it can be great to work here at times, starting this job is basically like drinking from a fire hose. It can be extremely stressful to work in this environment being expected to hit deadlines when they have no real training program for their interns. They basically give you a checklist and say "go for it" The other cons I have found is that the culture here can be extremely "clique-y" I worked with a few of the Production Managers (PM) here and never felt like they filled a mentor role I expected them to be in. It was also pretty disheartening to know that if you made a simple mistake, it was made known to every other PM in their separate group text where they would make fun of your and then explain what you did wrong. Overall the culture of this company never really made me feel welcome or that my efforts were appreciated. I felt that this was really hammered in on day 1 when they stressed "at-will" employment. The manager that hired me basically said that as an intern he can fire me for whatever reason so I better perform well. I worked here for a pretty good while and I always heard management boast about how they find subs and how little they pay them and it sounded basically like bid shopping. It did reflect on the quality of the homes they sell too. if you dont believe me, feel the hand rails in their showroom and compare them to any hand rail they have in the homes they build. To me it felt like it really wasn't about having a quality product and more about getting product out as quickly as possible. Overall I feel that there are companies out there that are probably more worth your time as an intern and they will most likely have more opportunities for you to be hired up after your internship

Thank you for your Glassdoor review of your internship experience at Alpine Homes. Residential construction project management is undoubtedly a busy, challenging, and rewarding career path. We look for interns to show initiative, ask questions, and enthusiastically immerse themselves in their internship experience. You’re correct; there is not a lot of hand-holding. Alpine Project Managers typically have 9 – 20 homes under construction at any one time. They deal with many day-to-day demands, including managing schedules, quality inspections, budgeting, subcontractor and materials availability, safety, jurisdiction inspections, stormwater compliance, sales and marketing, and permitting. Admittedly, this does not leave much time for the more intimate mentor-mentee experience you sought during your internship. Every Alpine Homes Project Manager has completed Alpine Homes’ extensive Project Manager training program. Completing it takes about one year and involves a significant investment in time and energy from Alpine management. If interns decide an opportunity with Alpine Homes is for them upon graduation, Alpine begins this training program on the first day of work. Because of the training time involved and the fact that interns are typically engaged in their career path discernment (residential, commercial, or more specialized fields of Construction Management), we do not expose interns to this training program. Alpine’s Project Managers at times share their slip-ups with all team members but it should be done in the spirit of continuous improvement. Yes, we do chuckle at our own mistakes. Alpine must enthusiastically embrace bidding as part of our daily operational practices because of current supply chain and subcontractor availability challenges. Alpine Project Managers must have plans A, B, and C for subcontractors and material suppliers. Most of our key trade partners have worked with us for years and appreciate our timely, reliable, and equitable payments. Alpine Homes wishes you the best as you complete your education and begin your construction management career. If you’d like to discuss your review in greater detail, please call me at (801) 838-9990. Sincerely, Ross Mitchell Vice President
