Pros

Over the course of roughly two years, Advance CTE has transformed as an organization. The organization launched in initiative to advance equity in Career Technical Education (CTE) in early 2018. Originally, the work of this initiative was outward facing. However, leadership recognized that in order to truly advance equity and to "practice what you preach," the organization needed to engage in internal equity work. As a result, leadership invested in an equity coach and multiple diversity, equity and inclusion training sessions to help transform the organization. This led to the revamp of many internal practices and policies, such as a revamp of the evaluation system, the introduction of a telework policy (pre-COVID), and a focus on prioritization to facilitate work/life balance. Leadership has committed to continuing to invest in equity training sessions and coaching, as they recognize this work is never truly "finished." The culture of the organization has also drastically shifted. Advance CTE has a very welcoming and supportive culture. Staff are incredibly nice and want to see each other succeed. Leadership cares about the well-being of employees and tries to provide as much flexibility as possible to meet employees' individual needs. Advance CTE is a great place to build a very strong resume in a short period of time. Regardless of age or title, leadership is willing to give staff significant responsibilities (with support) and help them develop strong project management skills. Since the organization is small, it's easy to get involved in projects that interest you and ask for and receive additional responsibilities. Additionally, Advance CTE's membership is very nice and members seem to really appreciate the organization's work.

Cons

Basecamp (The project management system the org uses is a bit outdated for the type of projects the org takes on, which can lead to a lot of time being spent on planning rather than execution of projects).

Pros

A collaborative, supportive environment with mission-driven professionals

Cons

Resources were stretched thin during my tenure, all staff wore a lot of different hats; as happens in small orgs., ladder up wasn't clear.
