Some six months ago a senior engineer disappeared. It seems management lied to us that he had "decided" to leave, but noone believe that anymore. he was outspoken, opinionated, yet dedicated software guy, pretty much everyone knows he's pushed, given gardening leave or paid off to keep quiet. Maybe a technical disagreement. Whatever it was he wasn't supposed to say, we realised it must be bad for the company if they were willing to lose him to keep the rest of us in the dark. I heard management have got rid of a earlier troublemaker too but it was before I joined.
Since then the software team's morale has dropped. We need to expand to get our projects done, but out of 23 software people, 5 permanents have resigned over the last six months and we've recruited one or two. It sounds similar in other parts of the company.
Management are putting on a brave face and saying they're not pandering to coders while spending money on treats and distractions. Fine if all your care about is benefits and getting paid.
