Pros

Being a mentor was a great experience because of what you get to learn as well as the students you get to meet. I really enjoyed being able to help people and deepen my understanding as a developer.

Cons

Management is terrible! The culture is terrible! You are disposable and they let you know that every day. Management is trying to cut costs everywhere possible (not because they are not making a profit, they are making a large profit) to increase profit. I started working just as management was changing so I was able to see and experience the whole deal. It started with firing the lead mentors (who oversee mentors and take care of all things student-related). Then they started looking for other ways to cut costs. They have lost most of the instructors (and are not planning on replacing them) and mentors are being switched out every 13 weeks so there is no passing on of knowledge. There is no training anymore. It is often the case that the office staff will get lunches or things but mentors get nothing. We are constantly told that we are replaceable and that we do nothing. That being said we interact with and teach the students 80% of the time. They only have two full-time instructors for four cohorts so the mentors are really doing more than ever with less training than ever and zero recognition.

Almost Great

Pros

Working with students who are trying to improve their lives is always a meaningful pursuit. That provides a large amount of job satisfaction. I enjoy a large amount of autonomy in terms of my schedule outside of the classroom and how I choose to teach the material. That allows me to tailor and craft a quality student experience. Lower to mid level management is awesome. Very aware of the demands on the staff and very supportive.

Cons

While I enjoy the autonomy of my job, I'm aware that it stems from a certain lack of organization and cohesiveness. For lazy or unmotivated staff members, that provides a massive opportunity to fail students by providing a subpar experience. Upper management is often completely out of touch with the details of the student experience and will sometimes push for subpar or even counterproductive curriculum and practices (in my opinion).
