Pros
We appreciate the constructive feedback and observations that this past employee provided. We were fortunate enough to have these concerns brought to our attention while they were employed with us. The turnover we experienced between February and May 2022 was significant. Poor leadership wasn’t the only reason we had turnover, it was the shift of the pandemic and rethinking of structure within the department for efficiently working full remote and providing more virtual programs. We also weren’t shielded from the Great Resignation. Moving out of state, childcare and private sector for more money were some of the reasons people resigned. Proudly the average tenure in our organization is seven years, with eight employees who have worked 10-20+ years with the organization. This demonstrates growth opportunities and overall employee satisfaction. We do have a lengthy training, we also perform highly specialized work. We want to do our best to ensure staff feel confident while performing their duties. In terms of transparency around pay, we are a nonprofit organization. Nonprofit work is not as well paid as commercial work. However, our pay is comparable to other positions in our area requiring similar education and training. In making decisions about pay, we also consider internal equity with our organization to attract and retain employees. For reference entry-level, teachers in the local area, the Washoe County School District, make $20 per hour, we have entry level positions that are paid in a range higher than that. We know, however, that each employee has unique circumstances and that need to make prudent financial decisions for themselves. Finally, we don’t take employee departures lightly. We will work for as long as possible with an underperforming employee to help support and understand their obstacles. Further, if an employee approaches management because they are unhappy, we take that seriously and work with them to see if we can make a change. Sometimes we can accommodate their wishes, and sometimes we come to an impasse. We know we are not perfect and have made mistakes. Our organization strives to work and be in alignment with our core values: resilience, leadership, curiosity, stewardship, courage, partnership, and intelligence. We wish all our former employees the best in their endeavors moving forward; we are very proud of the contribution they made to our organization while they were with us.
Cons
Non profit organizations can't compete with private companies salaries.
